Buying Guide: Why Choose a Gantry Hoist?

If you need an overhead lifting solution but cannot commit to a permanent installation, a Gantry Hoist is often the ideal alternative. Below, we explain how these systems work and why they might be the right choice for your specific care environment.

Gantry vs. Ceiling Track: The Key Difference

While both systems lift patients from above (which is generally more comfortable than a floor-based mobile hoist), the difference lies in how they are supported:

  • Ceiling Track Hoists (Fixed): As seen in our other category, these are bolted permanently into the ceiling joists or concrete. They require professional installation and building modifications.
  • Gantry Hoists (Free-Standing): These systems are not attached to the building. Instead, they function like a sturdy swing frame. Two upright legs sit on the floor, supporting a crossbar that holds the hoist unit. Because they are not physically installed into the building structure, they can be set up and taken down without leaving a trace.

When is a Gantry Hoist the Best Choice?

Gantry systems solve specific problems that fixed tracks cannot:

  • Rental Properties & Social Housing: If you are renting or living in council accommodation where you are not permitted to drill into ceilings or walls, a Gantry is the standard solution.
  • Temporary Needs: Perfect for short-term palliative care or rehabilitation where a permanent renovation isn't necessary.
  • Weak Ceilings: Some older properties have lath-and-plaster ceilings or weak joists that simply cannot support the weight of a patient. A Gantry transfers the weight to the floor instead.
  • Travel: Certain lightweight aluminum gantries are designed to be "portable." They can be disassembled into bags and put in a car boot, allowing you to take a safe lifting system on holiday.

Considerations Before Buying

While Gantry Hoists offer incredible flexibility, there are two factors to check before purchase:

  1. Floor Space: Unlike ceiling tracks, a Gantry has legs that sit on the floor. You must ensure you have enough room on either side of the bed or chair for these feet to sit safely without causing a trip hazard.
  2. Height Clearance: Ensure your room is tall enough to accommodate the top bar of the gantry while still leaving enough lifting range for the hoist tape to raise the patient clear of the bed.
